What is Toner?
If you already have color treated hair you’ve probably had a toner before. It is a very important part of the lightening process & a huge part of how you maintain your color. This can save your blondes from going brassy, red hair from fading and brunette’s looking dull. But what exactly does it do?? I’m going to break that down for you!
How does it work?
A toner is either a semi or demi permanent color used to deposit a pigment that doesn’t damage or change the color of your hair permanently. Toners are most often used to neutralize any unwanted tones out of your hair BUT can also add warmth, coolness or just neutralize. They add shine, increases the softness of your hair & reduce the appearance of split ends! This step is very important in our process because it closes the cuticle of the hair which creates a barrier between environmental and heat damage. Giving you the best longer lasting results.
How is it applied?
Most often at the shampoo bowl! The process of toning typically takes 10-20 minutes. Most toners require 15-20 minutes for the full effect. Always ask us questions if you are unsure about what is happening.
How long does toner last?
Because a toner isn’t a permanent color it will typically last about 4-6 weeks before you see it start to fade.
Is there any at-home toners?
Your hair color changes over time with the amount of time you spend outside, how many times you wash & how much heat you put on it. Blonde hair specifically tends to turn a brassy shade of yellow. Typically your stylist should recommend a purple shampoo or a color depositing shampoo. Redheads & brunettes can find that their hair turns a little dull & can also use a red/copper shampoo or brown which serve as an at-home toner.
Final take aways…
Toners are important to your hair’s health. Please consider the benefits to at-home toners or color depositing shampoos that will increase longevity of your toner from the salon. If you don’t know if you need one ask your stylist why you want one!
